Introduction to Domestic Abuse

Domestic abuse is a pattern of behaviour that comes in many forms such as, threats, violence, emotional, verbal or sexual abuse, and it is very common and can happen to anyone. Noticing the signs of an abusive relationship is the first step towards ending it.

Domestic abuse can occur to people in marriages, cohabitation as well as with family members. There are different types of domestic abuse and it does not always have to involve physical violence.

Domestic abuse can include:

  • Physical: Pushing, hitting, punching, kicking, choking and using weapons.
  • Sexual: Forcing or pressuring someone to have sec, unwanted sexual activity/rape, inappropriately touching or
  • groping someone or making them watch pornography.
  • Financial: Taking someone’s money, controlling their finances or even not letting someone work.
  • Emotional: Making an individual feel bad about situations or themselves or scared, stalking, blackmailing, playing mind games.

If you are worried that you or a friend or family member is suffering from domestic abuse, it is important to get help.
